NordPass is a zero-knowledge password manager developed by Nord Security, the same company that built NordVPN. It delivers cross-platform support, encryption, and data breach scanning.
NordPass is, however, cloud only. While this is great for many use cases, it might not be right for your needs. It also does not deliver secrets management or privileged access tooling, and its SIEM integrations, Microsoft Entra ID and Okta SSO, and automated provisioning are reserved for the Enterprise plan. Because of this, it might not be the ideal solution for every use case.
In this article, we’ll consider the top alternatives to NordPass that may focus on different use cases or bring different capabilities. Common capabilities include access to an encrypted vault, secure credential sharing, and breach monitoring, in addition to self-hosting, PAM, and developer secrets management.
We’ve evaluated the best password management solutions across cloud, self-hosted, and hybrid use cases. We have compared the levels of integration, admin policy controls, encryption architecture, certifications, and pricing.
A business password manager keeps your organization's logins in encrypted vaults and makes them available to employees on their devices.
Users save, generate and autofill passwords through browser extensions and apps, and share logins with colleagues without sending them in plain text. Admins invite and remove users from a central console, set password policies, review password health across the company, and see which company accounts have appeared in a data breach.
Business password managers use a zero-knowledge model. The app encrypts each item on the user's device before upload, with a key derived from the master password through a function such as Argon2id or PBKDF2, so the vendor stores data it can't read. Shared folders and vaults extend that encryption to teams, with permissions set per user or group. For directory integration, single sign-on (SSO) over SAML or OpenID Connect links sign-in to Microsoft Entra ID, Okta or Google Workspace, and SCIM provisioning creates and removes accounts as people join and leave. Activity logs record who viewed, shared or changed an item, and many products send these events to a SIEM.
Most are hosted by the vendor, and many let you pick the region your data is stored in. Some offer a self-hosted server, and a few support on-premises or air-gapped installs. Some vendors also extend past team passwords into secrets management for API keys and CI/CD pipelines, and into privileged access management with just-in-time access to servers and infrastructure.
To switch products, you usually export a file from one and import it into the other. CSV is the most common format, and it holds passwords in plain text, so delete it once the import is complete.
Here is a comparison of the top NordPass alternatives across key business password management capabilities, with NordPass Business included as a baseline.

Best for combining enterprise password management with privileged access
Keeper Security is a zero-knowledge password and PAM platform. It delivers an encrypted vault with shared folders, RBAC, and delegated administration for Business and Enterprise users.
In addition to its core password management functionality, Keeper also delivers Secrets Manager for machine credentials, session management, endpoint privilege management, and remote browser isolation, all part of KeeperPAM.
BreachWatch scans the dark web to identify exposed credentials, and with Advanced Reporting & Alerts, events can be synced to SIEMs including Splunk, Microsoft Sentinel, Datadog, Elastic and Google SecOps.
Data is hosted in AWS centers across the US, EU, Canada, Australia, and Japan. It also offers a dedicated AWS GovCloud (US) environment for US government customers.
We think Keeper Security is a strong option for mid-sized and large organizations that are looking for a single platform to deliver password management and PAM. It’s especially useful for public sector organizations.
We think the number of built-in integrations is one of Keeper’s key strengths. Its focus on the user experience helps to ensure that employees will use Keeper and store passwords properly, rather than looking for workarounds. Keeper is very intuitive and easy to use.
Keeper holds FedRAMP High Certification and FIPS 140-3 validation. It’s worth noting that some modules are paid add-ons, including BreachWatch, Advanced Reporting and Alerts, and KeeperPAM.
Best for engineering and DevOps teams
1Password is a business password manager that is delivered as part of its Unified Access platform, which also delivers SaaS management and PAM. With 1Password, every account is protected with a 128-bit Secret Key that is generated on the user’s device. Data stored within the vault is end-to-end encrypted with AES-256.
1Password’s Watchtower service scans your vault for passwords that are weak, reused, or have been breached. A domain breach report shows admins which company email addresses have appeared in a data breach.
As an extra add-on, 1Password Privileged Access delivers just-in-time access to cloud infrastructure, databases, and K8s for employees and AI agents.
We would recommend 1Password for organizations with large engineering and development teams that are looking for a single platform to manage all these use cases, as well as employee passwords, developer secrets, and SSH keys.
The Secret Key is a great security feature. Even if an attacker is able to obtain a password, they are not able to decrypt the vault without using the key that is held on the user’s device. Watchtower shows your security team weak, reused, and breached passwords, and the Events API sends sign-in and usage data to its tools.
1Password is a cloud only platform, with Privileged Access, Device Trust, and SaaS Manager as paid add-ons.
Best for open-source, self-hosted deployment
Bitwarden is an open-source password manager that offers a separate Secrets Manager for machine credentials. The Teams and Enterprise plans both include SCIM provisioning, directory syncing via Okta, Microsoft Entra ID, and Google Workspace. It supports Duo two-step login and event logs can be exported as JSON or CSV files.
One interesting feature is that shared credentials can be organized into collections, with permissions set at the user and group level.
Bitwarden’s Enterprise plan adds the most features. This adds SSO with trusted devices, enterprise policies, custom admin roles, account recovery, and detailed insights into vulnerable or compromised credentials. The Secrets Manager add-on can store API keys and other machine credentials, with integrations for GitHub and Ansible.
The service is also accessible via an app, available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. It also offers browser extensions for all major browsers.
Bitwarden is a highly capable, but also very user-friendly solution. It’s great for organizations looking for an open-source password manager that can be self-hosted.
It also includes a wide set of features on its entry-level tier. SCIM and directory sync, for example, are included with the $4 Teams plan. The fact that Bitwarden has an open-source codebase also allows security teams to review the encryption process. Combine this with self-hosting and you can have a great deal of control over your organization’s security.
Best for detecting credential risk and phishing in the browser
Dashlane Omnix is a password management platform delivered across three plans: Omnix Password Management, Omnix Credential Protection, and Omnix Enterprise. The Password Management option gives employees access to encrypted vaults with passkey storage, secure sharing, and AI-assisted autofill. The AI autofill uses a machine-learning engine that runs locally. Admins are able to set and manage vault policies, covering sharing, 2FA, and automatic logout.
Omnix Credential Protection uses Dashlane’s browser extension to monitor credentials, whether or not employees use the Dashlane vault. Via the browser, this can alert employees when they use a weak, reused, or compromised password.
It also delivers AI Phishing Alerts which assesses more than 75 domain attributes in less than half a second to warn users if they are interacting with a suspicious site. The top tier Omnix Enterprise option combines all of these capabilities.
Vault encryption happens on the user’s device, and cloud-side operations such as Confidential SSO run in AWS Nitro Enclaves.
We think Dashlane is a strong option for organizations that are looking to reduce credential exposure risks across the entire organization. Omnix Credential Protection means that even employees who never adopt the password vault still receive a degree of protection.
Dashlane extends password security beyond the vault to company-managed browsers, where it monitors credentials whether or not employees use the vault. The AI Phishing Alert is a great example of how this platform protects users.
Best for IT teams managing remote connections alongside passwords
Devolutions Cloud (formerly Devolutions Hub Business) is a cloud-hosted password vault. With this platform, data is encrypted on the user’s device under a zero-knowledge model, with admins managing role-based access permissions and audit logs. SSO and SCIM provisioning work with Microsoft Entra ID and Okta. Admins can also give contractors and external users access, with sign-in secured by TOTPs, security keys, or push MFA notifications.
Devolutions Cloud also serves as the shared vault for Remote Desktop Manager, a separate product included from the $400 package, which stores, shares, and launches RDP, SSH, and VNC sessions from the same vault. It also includes an offline mode. The Gateway module adds just-in-time RDP, SSH, VNC, and ARD access. Webhooks can send event information to your organization’s SIEM, Slack, and Microsoft Teams.
Devolutions Password Manager apps are available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and in the browser. Devolutions also offers a self-hosted option through Devolutions Server.
We think Devolutions Cloud is a strong option for IT teams and MSPs managing servers and remote connections. We were impressed by the capability of Remote Desktop Manager, especially how it allows administrators to launch remote sessions straight from the vault without accessing or exposing the underlying credentials.
The package structure allows you to build a service that matches your environment and needs. Devolutions doesn’t offer ongoing breach or dark web monitoring, but it checks passwords against Have I Been Pwned when they’re set. Its platform is also optimized for those with a degree of technical knowledge, so smaller organizations with less experience may find the process complex.
Best for on-premises and air-gapped deployment
Passbolt is an open-source password manager focused on IT managers and DevOps teams, built on OpenPGP. Within the platform, every secret is encrypted separately for each user. It also allows users to bring their own PGP key. The higher tiers deliver LDAP and AD sync, SSO with Microsoft, Google, OpenID, AD FS, and PingOne. It also offers SCIM provisioning for Entra ID and Okta, MFA policy enforcement, and account recovery.
Passbolt offers a free self-hosted tier through its Community Edition. In addition, there is a self-hosted Pro edition, and an option for Cloud plans with data centers in Belgium, Germany, or Luxembourg.
When self-hosted, the platform will run entirely on your own infrastructure. Passbolt provides extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari, with iOS and Android apps.
We think Passbolt is a strong option for IT, DevOps, and public sector organizations, particularly those that want cloud data stored within Europe. One of the platform’s great features is the per-user OpenPGP encryption.
This means that every secret is encrypted separately for each user who can access it. Passbolt also has a SOC 2 Type II audit report, and it checks passwords against known breaches when they’re entered, but it doesn’t offer ongoing breach or dark web monitoring. Paid plans have a 10-user minimum, so smaller teams may not make full use of the package.
Best for privacy-focused organizations that need European data residency
Proton Pass is an open-source password manager from Proton AG. Within the vault, every item is encrypted separately using 256-bit AES-GCM encryption. Shared vaults use OpenPGP and Curve25519 keys. Physical data centers are located in Switzerland, Germany, and Norway.
All Proton Pass business plans include Dark Web Monitoring, a password health check, passkey storage, and unlimited hide-my-email aliases. This allows employees to sign up for services or access third-party sites, without exposing their work address.
Higher tier options deliver SSO, SCIM provisioning, enterprise-oriented policies, detailed activity logs, and SIEM integration. Admins are able to enforce 2FA across the organization using an authenticator app or a security key.
Proton Sentinel will flag any suspicious sign-ins using AI-based detection and its own 24/7 security analysis. An app is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and web users.
We think Proton Pass is a strong option for privacy-focused organizations, particularly those operating within Europe. As an organization, Proton prioritizes transparency.
Their code is open source, and their apps have been audited by Cure53 and Recurity Labs. The company is ISO 27001 certified and has a SOC 2 Type II attestation. The fact that every business plan includes dark web monitoring is another great aspect of the deal.
Best for budget-conscious SMBs
RoboForm for Business is a password manager developed by Siber Systems. The platform offers deep admins controls to manage users and groups right out of the Admin Center. Admins can set role-based access and custom security policies, including requiring 2FA, password rules, and access restrictions.
Users can manage both personal and work passwords in a single secure vault. The platform also supports SSO via Microsoft Entra ID, Okta, Google Workspace, Ping, and OneLogin, and SCIM provisioning via Entra ID, Okta, and OneLogin. RoboForm provides breach monitoring which assesses saved passwords and corporate emails against known breaches and leaks. If found, both the admin and the user are notified.
The manager is available across two tiers: Business and Enterprise with orders of 10 or more licenses including a free RoboForm Family Plan for up to 5 accounts. All data stored within the vault is encrypted with AES-256, with PBKDF2-SHA256 key derivation.
The platform is compatible with Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iOS, and Android. It’s worth noting that Enterprises with 1,000 or more users are able to self-host.
RoboForm is best suited to SMBs that require SSO, SCIM, and AD integration at a low cost per user. The separation between personal and business accounts in one secure vault makes it easy for staff to keep personal and work passwords apart.
RoboForm does not publish a SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certification on its website. If these compliance standards are on your list of priorities, it’s worth checking directly with them. RoboForm has completed independent pentesting and has its own bug bounty program.
Best for access request workflows and organizations already using Zoho
Zoho Vault is a password and passkey manager that uses AES-256 encryption and a zero-knowledge model. It uses per-user RSA key pairs to share credentials. Admins are also able to set policies that are enforced organization wide.
This includes requiring users to request access to sensitive credentials and granting time-limited access on Enterprise, a break-glass account for emergency access on Professional, and IP and geolocation restrictions.
The Professional plan builds on these features to deliver a breached-password alert feature, folder sharing, as well as user and group sync across Microsoft Entra ID and Google Workspace.
An Enterprise plan adds AD integration, SAML 2.0, SSO for cloud apps, as well as Okta and OneLogin integrations. You can also connect the service to your SIEM with Splunk, IBM QRadar, Elastic, Microsoft Sentinel, Google SecOps, Coralogix, and Graylog.
We think Zoho Vault is a strong option for teams already using Zoho apps, and for NordPass customers who want more admin control without a big jump in price.
Zoho Vault Enterprise Edition is included in Zoho One, Zoho’s bundle of more than 45 business apps, so it’s a natural fit for anyone currently using or considering this service as well as looking for a password manager.
Zoho Vault offers more on its lower plans than NordPass, which keeps SSO, automated provisioning, and SIEM integrations for its Enterprise plan. Zoho Vault’s Professional plan, at $5 per user per month, syncs users and groups from Microsoft Entra ID, Google Workspace, and Okta. Enterprise, at $8, adds approval workflows, so users have to request access to sensitive passwords and admins can grant it for a set time, plus built-in integrations with more than 10 SIEM platforms. There’s also a free plan, and Standard starts at $1 per user per month.
Like NordPass, Zoho Vault is cloud only, so it won’t suit teams that need to host their own vault. And Zoho’s documentation shows that entry names, URLs, tags, and descriptions are stored unencrypted.

Whenever you select a new tool for your organization, focus on the capabilities you need, and prioritize them. Some will be required to help your business function smoothly; other features will be necessary from a regulatory point of view. In this section, we've highlighted some of the key areas you should consider when selecting a password manager for your environment.
NordPass limits Entra ID and Okta SSO and automated provisioning to its higher-tier Enterprise plan. When looking for an alternative, check which tier unlocks these features. RoboForm, for instance, supports SSO with five named identity providers on its Business plan.
Many business password managers are cloud only, including NordPass. If your policies or sector require you to host credential data yourself, look for a solution like Bitwarden (on its Enterprise plan), Passbolt, or Devolutions Server. Again, some platforms may allow self-hosting, but only at higher tiers.
Most standard password managers don't cover API keys, service accounts, or administrator sessions. If you need these areas to be secured, make sure you check before you commit to a platform. Keeper's KeeperPAM, 1Password Privileged Access, and Devolutions Gateway add just-in-time privileged access, and Bitwarden Secrets Manager stores machine credentials for CI/CD pipelines.
Dark web monitoring informs you when an employee's credentials appear in a breach. This gives you the opportunity to update passwords to ensure that accounts remain secure. Proton Pass includes it on every business plan, and Keeper sells it as the BreachWatch add-on. Dashlane goes further with Credential Risk Detection, which alerts employees in the browser when they use a weak or compromised password, including on accounts outside the vault.
Your sector or stakeholders may require you to work with vendors that hold specific certifications. Speak to your providers to understand which certifications they hold. Keeper holds FedRAMP High authorization and FIPS 140-3 validation, which matters for public-sector buyers, and most vendors here hold SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001. RoboForm does not publish either certification on its website.
A password manager only works if staff use it. Run a pilot with a real team to check how easily they can save, fill, and share passwords in the browser and on mobile, and whether the admin console is easy to manage day to day.
Check that you can share logins with teams through shared folders with role-based permissions, and which policies admins can enforce, such as master password strength, two-step login, and blocks on exports.
The vendor can't reset a forgotten master password, so check whether admins can recover a user's account, and which plan includes it.
NordPass can export vault data as a CSV file, which is the standard format for importing this type of data. Before rolling out the new password manager, run a test migration to check for any obstacles or discrepancies. Make sure you check how passwords, files, folder structures, and passkeys are imported, as the transition between platforms may not be a clean one.
Choosing the right password manager means balancing ease of use for end users, admin features and security controls.
NordPass is a popular service, but if for whatever reason you are considering an alternative option, weigh these features carefully. One consideration is where the service is hosted. If you want to keep more control over your data sovereignty, a self-hosted option may be worth opting for.
All of the solutions on this list offer compelling solutions. We can only recommend testing first-hand and getting end-user buy-in where possible before making a purchasing decision. While it’s not difficult to switch between password managers, you will save a lot of time and effort by making the right choice first time around.
For more, check out our password managers buyers guide, or some of our interviews with leaders in the identity and access management space.
Bitwarden Enterprise, Passbolt, Devolutions Server and Self-Managed Keeper can all be self-hosted, and Passbolt supports fully air-gapped deployment. RoboForm offers self-hosting to Enterprise customers with 1,000 or more users. NordPass, 1Password, Dashlane, Proton Pass, and Zoho Vault are cloud only.
Bitwarden, Proton Pass, and Passbolt are all open source. Bitwarden (on Enterprise) and Passbolt can also be self-hosted, and Passbolt’s free Community Edition supports unlimited users.
NordPass’s Data Breach Scanner checks whether your company’s email domains or passwords have appeared in a data breach. Coverage among the alternatives varies:
