Our goal is simple: To create a community where women can share experiences, celebrate achievements, and spark conversations that challenge the traditional assumptions of who belongs in cybersecurity.
So why did we create this series?
Because the industry desperately needs it. Too often, women’s voices are missing from the conversation—whether it’s interviews, conference panels, or leadership forums. In fact, at one recent conference, a so-called “Women in Cybersecurity” panel was made up entirely of men.
Yes, really.
It’s no secret that cybersecurity is a male-dominated industry. But that doesn’t excuse the fact that there are so few platforms for women within this community to share their knowledge, expertise, and experiences. We wanted to change that.
What to expect: Throughout nine upcoming episodes, we’ll host panel conversations with women working in the cybersecurity industry:
- Episode 1: How To Build A Cyber Startup – Poornima DeBolle and Kris Bondi discuss how to found a successful cybersecurity company—including all the drivers and challenges that go along with it.
- Episode 2: Breaking Into Cybersecurity – Audra Streetman and Olga Polishchuck discuss how to improve your chances at getting hired, the benefits of cross-skilling, and learning how to navigate the reality of working in such a fast-paced, high-pressure industry.
- Episode 3: From Intel To Action – The Human Side Of Cyber Threat Intelligence – Melissa Bischoping, Rebecca Taylor, and Kristina Balaam discuss everything from what makes a successful threat researcher, to top tips for teams struggling to apply threat intelligence within their own organizations.
- Episode 4: Innovating For The Future Of Cybersecurity – Margaret Cunningham, Kavita Varadarajan, and April Lenhard discuss how they balance innovation and governance, the importance of user feedback, and how to build trust with users when introducing new technologies to the market.
- Episode 5: Navigating The Cyber Policy Maze – Sezaneh Seymour and Courtney Maugé discuss how the evolving regulatory landscape is reshaping the ways in which organizations approach cybersecurity risk management.
- Episode 6: The Truth About AI – Nicole Carignan, Laura Ellis, and Emanuela Zaccone discuss the cultural shift we’re experiencing in human-AI interaction, the biggest risks and rewards to deploying AI in the SOC, and their top tips for those hoping to break into the AI for cyber or cybersecurity for AI spaces with a new idea.
- Episode 7: Creating A Culture Of Security – Anne Cutler, Molly McLain Sterling, and Khush Kashyap discuss how to build an effective security strategy and create a strong culture of security within an organization.
- Episode 8: Secrets From The Cyber C-Suite – Janine Seebeck, Siroui Mushegian, and Libby McIlhany discuss how they facilitate conversations between technical and non-technical executives, managing the pressure of always being in the room where it happens, and the reality of how women in C-level roles are perceived by other execs within the business.
- Episode 9: The CISO Survival Guide – Dana Simberkoff and Tia Hopkins discuss how to deal with burnout and maintain a healthy work-life balance, what threats are on the horizon that CISOs should be thinking about now, and the importance of nurturing diversity within cybersecurity teams.
What we’ve learned from the show: Whilst interviewing our panelists, we noticed three key themes that cropped up time and again:
- You don’t need to be a cybersecurity expert to start a career in cyber – subject matter expertise can be developed and trained. However, having a creative, curious mindset is something that can’t be taught so easily. Throughout the series, we spoke with people from software development, education, journalism, and even musical theatre backgrounds, and it became clear that teams that embrace these diverse perspectives open the door to innovation and new ideas.
- Working in such a high-stakes, high-pressure industry comes with a heavy mental load—whether you’re a CISO protecting your organization from attacks, a product developer trying to build securely to protect your customers, or a threat researcher that sees the very real impact that cyberattacks have on people every day. It’s critical that cybersecurity professionals find ways to support one another through this, to maintain a healthy work-life balance.
- Collaboration and community are critical in the cybersecurity industry. They don’t just help us address that burnout, but they help us all to do better. After all, at the end of the day, we’re all on the same team.
We knew it was time to do something different. To create a platform where women in cyber don’t just get a seat at the table—they lead the conversation.
Women In Cyber is a chance to hear from the experts you should be hearing from.
