In 2003, our CEO, Craig MacAlpine, founded EPA Cloud, an email security company that was acquired by Ziff Davies (formerly J2Gobal) in 2013. He started Expert Insights because he saw first-hand the challenges organizations faced when looking for high-performing IT security solutions.

Yes, Expert Insights is fully independent. We are privately funded, with no external owners or investment. We are entirely independent of vendor influence and never allow vested interests to influence our content or reviews.

What is the Expert Insights Editor’s Score And How Do You Test Products?
Expert Insights conducts long form reviews of technical solutions across different software categories. The review process includes:
- Product demonstration given by the vendor
- Independent technical testing and analysis
- Review of technical capability in relation to other products on the market
- Thorough accuracy review and scoring
- Final review and publish
When we have finalized a review, we award a score on a scale of one to five, which is deemed our “Editor’s Score.” This score is decided based on the technical tester’s experience with the product and explained throughout the final published review.
How Does Expert Insights Generate Income?

Our Buyers’ Guides and review pages list the top software vendors – not just those that pay us – but the ranking and ordering of these products may sometimes reflect vendors from which we receive compensation. However, review content, scores, and our editorial content (aside from designated sponsored articles, which are always clearly marked as being sponsored) is completely and fully independent from software vendors.
We understand how important it is that our articles are accurate and helpful. For this reason, we have a strict review process for any potential clients to make sure their products are technically strong, fit for purpose, and relevant to our audience. We can, and often do, turn away clients with solutions that we do not recommend to our users.
How Do Expert Insights Decide Which Products To Include In Top 10 Buyers’ Guides?
Our “Top 10 Buyers’ Guides” (a general term used for list articles, which includes guides with more or less than ten solutions) offer a general overview of the market-leading providers in any particular category.
Vendors included in these articles are chosen by our entirely independent editorial team, according to our internal inclusion guidelines. These criteria include:

- Vendors must have a comprehensive feature set that meets the criteria set by a software category’s sub-editor and consultation with experts
- Features must be regularly updated, and perform well in independent tests
- Market Perception
- Vendors must be credible, and recognized in the wider market
- Customers should be favorable towards the solution in objective reviews
- Customer Usage
- Established vendors should have a high customer usage, reflected in market share
- Niche and challenger vendors should have credible case studies to reflect quality
- Product Heritage
- Market leaders should be long established with a clear product history and impact on the market
- New and challenger brands should meet a clear need in the market with a strong business case

Can I Delete My Product Listings Page?
Because we want to become a fully comprehensive platform to help companies find the right solution, we do not remove any product listings pages.
